The regions of Gandhara and Arachosia, located in modern-day southwestern Afghanistan and northwest Pakistan, is a region where many different cultural influences come together and produce a unique and vibrant material culture. This class will focus on the archaeology of the region, examining important sites such as Taxila, Kandahar, and Begram, all of which played an important role in the successive Achaemenid, Mauryan, Greco-Bactrian, Indo-Greek, Kushan dynasties and into Late Antiquity. The class will look at the evidence for these various empires through architecture, coinage, pottery, and other forms of material culture to better understand the cultural changes that took place in this region over the millennia under examination.
