For First Time, US Congress Holds Iftar Meal

Washington-based Muslim Advocates, a national civil rights organization, recently hosted an Iftar celebration at the US Capitol along with Democratic Representatives André Carson, Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib, all Muslims, as honorary co-chairs. The event was attended by the congressional leadership.  The White House has traditionally held an Iftar, the meal that breaks the daily fast for devout Muslims during the holy month of Ramadan, since the presidency of Bill Clinton. However, this is the first time one was held at the Capitol.  “The 116th Congress has ushered in historic levels of diversity, and tonight’s similarly historic Iftar, which I am honored to co-chair, is a prime example of the increased representation that Muslims are experiencing in the halls of Congress and all across America,” Carson said.
