GLOD: Political Theatre as a Civil Right returns Monday 28 September 2020 1pm EDT, 6pm BST, 8pm GMT+3 with Afghan company Simorgh
Join us to watch Masks Under Burqa, a play recounting fragments of the bitter history of women’s suffering: the way traditional societies view women and the constant and successive wars in which women and children have been and are their constant victims.
The play is set in Afghanistan during the civil war in the 1990s, when Kabul was divided between different factions of the Mujahideen and countless atrocities and crimes against women took place, including the bitter and painful incident in Afshar, an area in Kabul. In the battle, which lasted almost two days, prominent Mojahedin forces, attacked an area called Afshar, which was controlled by the Hazara and Shiite people under the control of the Islamic Unity Party of Afghanistan. What followed was a brutal treatment of all people, but especially the women and children of the area, forced to submit in every conceivable way.
Please note the performance contains reference to rape, child rape & violence against women. It is performed in Dari with English subtitles and will be followed by a panel discussion in English.

About Simorgh:
Simorgh Film was created in 2005 in order to work for human rights, especially for women’s and children’s rights as a human rights defender. It has been involved in social development programs in Herat, Kabul, Bamiyan and Kunduz. Running training and workshops, educational theatre for capacity building, human rights, stable democracy, freedom of speech and elections.
It has worked in villages and far districts in those provinces and held educational theatre workshops in prisons (women and men), juvenile correction centres, drug addiction rehabilitation centres, women’s shelters, boys and girls school and orphanages and child support centres as well as for the personnel of the Afghan National Police.
It is split into two departments: Film & Theatre. Later in 2007, it added a children’s theatre department. They have produced more than 30 short and 3 long films; a TV series with a human rights focus specifically addressing women’s rights and participated in national (Afghanistan National Theatre Festivals) as well as international theatre festivals (2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011 in India; New Delhi and Mumbai- 2012 in Turkey and Sweden). In these performances, more than 80% of the theatre group consisted of young women.
