Libya’s Horrific Detention Centers

The situation for the refugees in Libya is devastating. Thousands of people are trapped in numerous detention centers and facing grave human rights violations: torture, rape, enslavement and executions. The EU governments are well aware of the situation. Nevertheless, they continue supporting the responsible conflict parties, finance and equip criminal militias of the so-called “Libyan Coastguard.” The aim: Crack down on the refugees trying to reach Europe at any cost.

SEEBRÜCKE Movement and the Foundation PRO ASYL invite you to take a deeper look at the situation in Libya. We will reflect on the role of the EU and other UN institutions and discuss opportunities to get refugees out of the horrific detention in Libya.

In Germany alone, there are over 130 municipalities that declared themselves “safe harbors” ready to receive refugees. Undoubtedly it is not a capacity issue but a question of political will to stop the cooperation with the “Libyan Coastguard” and to evacuate refugees to Germany and Europe.

The program will feature input by Sally Hayden, journalist and expert on the conditions in Libyan detention centers (held in English). Afterward, there will be a panel discussion (in German and English, with simultaneous translation from German into English). This discussion event will be live-streamed.

The program, hosted by Flüchtlingsrat Berlin (the Berlin Refugee Council) will be held on January 16 from 6:30 to 9:30 pm at Diakonie, Caroline-Michaelis-Straße 1, 10115 Berlin, Germany.
