Médiations et migrations

The Issam Fares Institute for Public Policy and International Affairs at the American University of Beirut invites you to participate in dialogue on the book “Médiations et migrations,” on Thursday, February 20, 2020, from 5 to 7 pm in the conference hall (fourth floor) at the institute on the campus of the American University of Beirut (opposite to Green Oval).

The session will discuss the problem of immigration and asylum in the Euro-Mediterranean space and the importance of presenting it at the current stage, starting with the engagement of the various Mediterranean and European countries – transit and destination countries – with this old and renewed reality in light of the worsening crises of the Middle East and the concerns it raises on the extremist right and populist tendencies in Europe.

A comparison will be presented between the Lebanese experience, which includes the largest proportion of Syrian refugees in addition to the Palestinian refugees on the one hand, and the French experience on the other. France is historically known to receive asylum seekers and is currently working to amend immigration and asylum laws, which raises a wide political and media record.

The debate during this session revolves around the book “Médiations et migrations” which deals with how to deal with the issue in a group of Euro-Mediterranean countries and points of difference and convergence among them, especially the European countries that are divided and unable to develop a unified migration policy. Taking into account the specificity of the Mediterranean basin, where the geographical and political realities place the countries in front of the problem of the imposed immigration management, it makes it difficult to frame the number of arrivals and establish a pre-selected migration, as is the case in Canada, for example.

The session will be moderated by Issam Fares Ziyad Al-Sayegh, a research fellow in public policy, with the participation of some of those who have contributed to the book:
