During these exceptional times, it can be difficult to stay on top of developments in fragile countries in the MENA region, while it remains crucial to be well informed and to plan for sustainable and necessary interventions. With this in mind, the Greater Middle East Platform – an expert network from the Netherlands with excellent connections to the region – organizes a micro-course on the specific situation in various countries during the pandemic.
Turkey & Syria: Despite the tens of thousands of cases in the regions under the Syrian government control, the Syrian regime is not admitting the spread of COVID-19, and instead they are forcing the medical staff to register them as pneumonia. On the other hand, the oppositions areas have zero cases so far due to the natural isolation, however, they’re facing different crises. Although Turkey -which is hosting over 4 million Syrian refugees- has one of the strongest health systems in the region, COVID-19 is harvesting the refugees’ future more than their lives. Khaled Shaaban is a Syrian ICT infrastructure professional and certified applications specialist from Microsoft, and humanitarian activist with 10 years of experience in ICT4D. He founded Roia- ICT for Goodness in 2012 as a response to the Syrian crisis, which is now operating in Syria and Turkey. With his team, Khaled has implemented 16 ICT based development projects in Syria and Turkey, in the field of skills development, livelihood, capacity building, refugees’ integration. In 2019, Khaled has co-founded Turnsole Technologies, a Software Development social enterprise to build bridges between ICT employers and vulnerable ICT talents in the Middle East.
