The Ramesses Girdle: a weaving marvel!

The Ramesses Girdle: a weaving marvel!

Thu, Nov 25, 2021 1:50 PM - 4:00 PM Greenwich Mean Time (UTC±0)

Tickets (£5) here.

Dr Ashley Cooke, Liverpool World Museum explores the secrets of the Ramesses girdle, one of the museum’s star attractions.

About this event

Abstract: A scarf, a belt, a girdle; this rare piece of royal clothing in the collections of National Museums Liverpool has been called different things since it was first displayed in 1855. Tomb and temple paintings show how it could be worn wrapped around the chest and fastened at the waist. The girdle is brightly coloured and woven with rows of ankh hieroglyphs meaning ‘life’. This masterpiece of linen weaving will be the focus of this presentation, discussing provenance, interpretation and manufacture.

Biography: Ashley Cooke has worked in museums for over twenty years and has over a decade of fieldwork experience working at five archaeological sites across Egypt. In 2006 he graduated from the University of Liverpool with a PhD in Egyptology. In the same year, he was appointed Curator of Egyptian and Near Eastern Antiquities at World Museum, part of National Museums Liverpool, where he is now Lead Curator of Antiquities, in charge of collections from the ancient world, including some 20,000 items from Egypt and Sudan.
