Shubbak’s [2] QFI-supported series of themed, interactive education webinars for children and young people aged 12+ highlight the creativity and innovation of Arab artists by offering an insight into the stimulating practices of contemporary artists.
Walk With Us is the second in the series. Over 45 minutes two award-winning artists, writer, poet and activist lisa luxx and playwright Sara Shaarawi, will explore how they as Arab women are challenging the existing patriarchal systems of society. The webinar includes:
- Clips of their work and creating in action
- Live poetry reading
- Live activities for students to join (all abilities)
- Live Q&A for students to ask questions

The webinar ties in across curriculum subjects: English Literature, Drama & Theatre Arts, PSHE & Citizenship, Humanities, Geography, Sociology, Anthropology, Modern Foreign Languages (Arabic).
- Suitable for KS3, KS4, Colleges, ESOL students, youth & community groups in the UK & internationally.
- Hosted on Zoom, following latest safeguarding guidelines
- Participants don’t need to prepare except for having pens and paper to hand for live activities.
- BSL interpretation available
What to Expect:
Sara will share insights into her playwriting practice, particularly the superhero character she created to confront violence and harassment against women in her recent audio-led work, Niqabi Ninja. She will talk about how she uses theatre as a tool for social change and the empowerment of female voices, responding to key moments in recent history like the Egyptian Revolution.
lisa will reflect on her career as a poet and activist working across the UK and Lebanon. She will also perform poetry from her recent book fetch your mother’s heart live, and offer innovative writing techniques to enable the students to write their own poems in a language of their choice.

Shubbak Festival is the UK’s largest biennial festival of contemporary Arab culture, bringing new and unexpected voices alongside established artists together in an ambitious programme that connects audiences and communities with contemporary Arab visual arts, film, music, theatre, dance, literature and debate.
lisa luxx is a queer writer, performer, essayist and activist of British Syrian heritage. She is the winner of the Out-Spoken Prize of Performance Poetry 2018. Her performance poetry has been broadcast across the media including Channel 4, BBC Radio 4, VICE TV and ITV. luxx’s written poetry, essays and opinions are regularly published internationally in newspapers, magazines and anthologies. She has lectured on the philosophy of language in mental health for TEDx.
Sara Shaarawi is a playwright from Cairo who is now based in Glasgow. She has had her work performed at the Tron Theatre (Glasgow), Traverse Theatre (Edinburgh), Village Pub Theatre (Edinburgh), Platform (Easterhouse), Rich Mix (London) and CCA (Glasgow). In 2017, she partnered with the Workers Theatre to crowdfund and create Megaphone, a new bursary aimed at supporting artists of colour based in Scotland.
Alia Alzougbi is a leader in the creative and cultural industries, with significant experience in the education sector. She has worked closely with national and international organisations including the British Museum, the National Theatre, Clore Leadership and the British Council to create encounters that question cultural representation and inclusion in education and the arts.
