11 Killed in Baghdad Twin Car Bombs

A double car bombing killed at least 11 people in central Baghdad on Thursday morning, the Iraqi Interior Ministry said.

According to news reports, the cars blew up almost simultaneously amid heavy traffic.

Witnesses said the dead include police officers and several children. At least a dozen people were wounded in what appears to be a suicide bombing on a street that passes an Interior Ministry office.

The bombings are part of a series of insurgency attacks, shooting and kidnappings that have swept across Iraq in the past 18 months or so.

Insurgents are fighting the United States-led occupation of Iraq.

The area of the bombings accommodates Baghdad University, the Australian embassy and hotels frequented by Westerners.
