17 killed in Afghanistan, including Americans

At least seventeen people, including three American soldiers, were killed in Afghanistan over the weekend.

At least seven people were killed on Sunday in an explosion in the capital Kabul.

The Afghani Defense Ministry said the victims of Sunday’s attacks included American soldiers as well as Afghani and Nepalese nationals.

The bomb went off opposite the headquarters of Interpol in Kabul where many aid agencies are located. The Qatar-based Al-Jazeera TV channel reported that the bombing was thought to target the United States Anti-Terrorism Center in Kabul. Security sources in Kabul said they believe explosives were planted in a parked car in the area, but the police are still investigating the details of the incident.

A spokesman for the Taliban was interviewed on Al-Jazeera and assumed responsibility for Sunday’s bombing. They regretted that Afghans were harmed in the attack.

On Saturday, ten people were killed and some 30 injured when a bomb went off in a school some 130 kilometers (80 miles) from Kabul. Four of the victims were young children and five were teenagers. They were preparing for evening classes in the school.
