A-Shara’: Israel avoids resumption of talks

In an address to the U.N. General Assembly on Monday, Syrian Foreign Minister Farouq A-Shara’ made allegations against both Israel and the United States.

Regarding the war in Iraq, A-Shara’ asked: “Why would billions of dollars be spent to bring about a regime change in a given country when these resources could be otherwise channeled to finance education or develop projects in development countries?”

With regard to Israel, A-Shara’ asserted that, “Israel bears an important share of the responsibility for intensifying and worsening the American predicament in Iraq by avoiding the resumption of the peace process despite the hands extended in peace by the Palestinians, Syrians and Lebanese.”

In so saying, A-Shara’ hinted at his president’s call a few days ago to Israel, to resume the talks between the two countries.

A-Shara’ also responded to Israel’s foreign minister’s support of the recent U.N. Resolution 1559, which called on Syria to withdraw its military forces from Lebanon, and stop its political involvement there. He wondered out loud, how Israel could support this resolution, when Israel itself is conquering the Lebanese Shib’a Farms.
