Al-Qa’ida Planned Attacks in Kuwait

A group of suspected Al-Qa’ida supporters arrested in Kuwait planned to recruit people to fight in Iraq and attack foreign targets in Kuwait, a source from the Kuwaiti interior ministry said.

The group was arrested earlier this month, according to news reports.

Nine detainees are thought to be Al-Qa’ida supporters, suspected of indoctrinating youngsters with radical Islamist ideas and assisting them in entering Iraq via Syria. Three other suspects have also been arrested since.

Kuwait has reportedly beefed up its security recently since the security situation in the neighboring Iraq and Saudi Arabia has become increasingly unstable.

Authorities are also trying to clamp down on Islamists who oppose the American presence in the country, which was used as a launching-base for the attack on Iraq last year.
