Another Bomb in Christian Area of Beirut

A bomb rocked a Christian suburb of Beirut on Saturday, injuring five people. It was the third such attack in eight days.

Observers believe Syria is behind the bombings, seeking to instill fear that security will collapse if and when it withdraws its troops from Lebanon.

The international community has demanded that Syria remove its forces, estimated at about 14,000, from Lebanon, and the United Nations Security Council has passed a resolution demanding so.

A report by U.N. investigators issued last week leaves little doubt that Syrian President Bashar Al-Asad is behind the assassination of former prime minister Rafiq Al-Hariri, whose killing set off massive public protests demanding an end to Syrian influence in Lebanon.

Syrian troops continue their slow withdrawal from Lebanon

More Syrian troops were seen evacuating their posts in the Beqaa Valley over the weekend, reports the London-based daily A-Sharq Al-Awsat.

The troops evacuated bases in some cities and villages in the region.

It was reported that the evacuation was coordinated with the local councils and owners of the land where the bases were situated.

U.N. Resolution 1559 demands that all Syrian troops leave Lebanon immediately. So far, only a very small portion of the 14,000 troops has left the country. It is expected that most of the Syrian soldiers and intelligence officers will leave Lebanon only after the country’s parliamentary elections at the end of May.
