Arab League Summit Postponed

The Tunis summit of Arab leaders slated to begin Monday has been postponed indefinitely.

The summit, a gathering of high-profile leaders from across the Arab world, gave rise to disputes during marathon talks in a preliminary meeting of Arab foreign ministers over the weekend.

The contentious issues included the recent reform plan proposed by the U.S. promoting democracy and human rights in the Middle East known as ‘The Greater Middle East’, the fight against terror and differences over peace overtures to Israel in light of the assassination of Hamas leader Ahmad Yasin last week.

The Tunisian minister of foreign affairs announced on Saturday evening that the summit was postponed because Arab foreign ministers could not reach an agreement about the summit’s agenda, including various initiatives of reforms for human rights and increased democracy in the Arab world.

No new date was announced for the summit.
