ARABIC MEDIA ROUNDUP – 21 October 2002

Al-Manar – weekly

American – Israeli Plan:
Erasing Iraq from the map and annexing her to Jordan, expelling Palestinians to “Greater Jordan”

The weekly Al-Manar claims, according to British political sources, that the Americans and Israelis are about to exploit the opportunity of creating a new Middle East. According to those same “British sources,” Iraq will be wiped off the map of the new Middle East and will be annexed to Jordan. Likewise, in the framework of this plan, the Palestinians will be expelled from the West Bank and the Gaza Strip to “Greater Jordan” (to which Iraq will be added). In this way, Israel will be able to rule over all the Palestinian territories. The weekly adds that these “sources” contend that this plan was recently raised in talks between the President of the United States and the Prime Minister of Israel.

Al-Hayyat Al-Jadida – daily

On the first page of the daily, there appeared an invitation to participate in a ceremony marking the two-year anniversary of the death of a Palestinian youth. The text of the invitation begins with the Quranic verse, (The chapter on Women, verse 74):

“Whoever fighteth in God’s war, whether he be slain or conquer, he will be given in the end a great reward.”

The father of the martyr wrote the invitation and at the end he exclaims,

“Together, until an independent Palestinian state with its capital in Jerusalem will be built, under the leadership of our leader and symbol Abu Amar (Yassir Arafat), the historic leader of the Palestinian people, may God preserve him.”

The reason for the death of the youth, Omar Isma’il Al-Buhay’si written (on the site of the Palestinian news agency) in the list of the Palestinian dead since the beginning of the Intifada, is “a bullet in the chest.”

A-sharq Al-Awsat – daily

Death in suspicious circumstances of an American diplomat in Yemen.

The daily newspaper, A-sharq Al-Awsat, published in London, reported the death of an American diplomat. According to well-informed sources in the capital of Yemen, San’aa, the body of the diplomat was found in his car next to the city of Bajel, situated between San’aa and Walhadida. A heavy news-blackout was imposed on the event, especially because the incident happened a few hours after the Commander of American forces in the region, Tommy Franks, visited San’aa. Franks discussed the war on terror with Yemenite leaders.

According to those same sources, a post-mortem was conducted on the body at the American Embassy building in the presence of the embassy doctor and a representative of the Yemenite forensic medicine department. It emerged from the initial analysis that the diplomat was killed in a car accident whilst driving. However, no clear reasons have been given for his death. According to Yemenite sources, the diplomat is not a member of the American Embassy team and he was taking part in a special project in Yemen. The diplomat was not living in Yemen on a permanent basis.

A-sharq Al-Awsat – daily

The ‘Al-Aqsa Martyr’s Brigade’ is threatening to assassinate “corrupt ministers” in the new government.

The A-sharq Al-Awsat daily reported that the Al-Aqsa Martyr’s Brigade (the military arm of Fatah) is threatening that “if the new government being formed by Arafat will include corrupt ministers from the government which has just resigned”, the Martyr’s Brigade will consider themselves exempt from all understandings which have been reached between Fatah field commanders and the Palestinian Authority as regards terror attacks within Israel. They announced that they would use weapons against “those same corrupt officials who receive allowances and who serve American and Israeli interests.”

Abu Mujahid, one of the Al-Aqsa Brigade commanders, said to the A-sharq Al-Awsat correspondent that “if the Israelis and Americans force collaborators and corrupt officials into appointments in the new government, the Brigades will carry out a series of suicide attacks within Israel and will also use weapons against these corrupt ministers.
