Arabic Media to Reconsider Image of Women

The media in the Arab world is to create an advisory council specifically concerning the image and role of women in the Middle East.

Jordan’s Queen Rania welcomed the proposal during a meeting of the chief executives of Arabic satellite television channels and regional newspaper editors, reports the Jordan Times.

“While Arab women have done well in establishing identity by affecting changes in legislation and asserting their intellectual capacity, more assistance was needed from the media to benefit their movement,” the paper quoted the queen as saying.

The media people at the session agreed there needs to be more engagement of women in social, political and economic TV programming.

Al-Jazeera’s top executive Adnan A-Sharif said the TV companies need more freedom in order to be able to report more on women’s issues.
