Army Sets Up ‘Withdrawal City’

The Israeli army is preparing accommodation for security forces who will be evacuating some 1,800 families from Gaza and the West Bank this summer.

They have set up a temporary tent city, which will put up thousands of soldiers and security personnel participating in the evacuation in August.

The living area near Zikim Beach includes tents, air-conditioned dining room tents, a synagogue, a media room, a Laundromat and even a falafel stand. An outside catering company will provide food for the soldiers.

The officers organizing the mass accommodation are putting particular emphasis on water provisions. They fear soldiers may suffer from dehydration since the evacuation is taking place during the hot summer months.

Also, the army demolished 11 deserted buildings in the Gaza Strip on Sunday afternoon, near a compound where radical right-wingers, opponents of the withdrawal plan, are staking out.

The army is tearing down the buildings for fear that the opponents will use them for activities against the withdrawal.
