Bahraini Women’s Union Sues State

The Bahrain Women’s Union has sued the emirate’s Labour and Social Affairs Ministry for not granting it a license, according to news sources in the Gulf.

Union officials claim that the government has stalled on the issue and insists that the group change its name to the Union of Women’s Societies, which would limit membership to existing organizations, according to reports. This, officials claim, is a crucial difference, as they want the independent union to be open to all women in Bahrain.

Besides limiting membership, the ministry reportedly wants to change some of the union’s programs.

The trial opened on Saturday but has been delayed until November as the ministry has asked for more time to study the case, reported Gulf News Online.

If approved, an independent Bahraini women’s union would be the second in the region; a similar organization already exists in Kuwait.
