Bird flu has reached Egypt, reports the Egyptian daily Al-Ahram.
Six governorates have so far reported bird flu has spread into their territory. Egyptian Prime Minister Ahmad Na’dif is asking Egyptians to stay calm, but until now it is reported that some 16,000 birds were slaughtered by the authorities to prevent further spread.
No humans were reported to have been infected, but hospitals and health centers all around the country are opening their doors for citizens who want to know about the risks involved.
Special committees have been formed to ensure all birdhouses in the infected areas are destroyed. In Egypt, many keep chickens on their roof tops and in their yards. The government announced it would aid people whose livelihoods are dependent on chickens.
