Car Bomb Targets Lebanese Presenter

A popular Lebanese television anchorwoman was severely wounded when a bomb exploded under her car on Sunday.

The bomb was planted under the driver’s seat of her Range Rover.

May Chidiac is an anchor for the Lebanese Broadcasting Corporation (LBC), a Christian-owned network which is considered to be a leading anti-Syrian media outlet.

Chidiac is known for hosting political programs.

She is in critical condition in a Beirut hospital. Officials say she had an arm and a leg amputated. She is also suffering from severe burns all over her body, and is fighting for her life.

The attack occurred weeks before an international investigating committee presents its findings regarding the assassination of former Lebanese prime minister Rafiq Al-Hariri in February 2005.

Accusing fingers were pointed at Syria with regard to the murder, although Damascus has denied any connection.

Al-Hariri’s killing sparked mass popular protests in Lebanon urging Syria to leave the country.

Following Lebanese and international pressure, Syria ended a 29-year presence in Lebanon in April, but many suggest Damascus still has a heavy hand in Lebanese affairs.

There have been several assassinations and attempted killings of anti-Syrian figures in Lebanon since Al-Hariri’s death.
