Corruption in Arab World Challenged

International anti-corruption experts are gathering in Bahrain to fight corruption in the Arab world. Transparency International, a non-governmental organization devoted to combating corruption, is organizing the gathering.

Participants in the three-day workshop, entitled ‘Adaptation of the Transparency International Source Book,’ will help draft guidelines for the Arab world.

According to the Bahraini Gulf Daily News, around 60 representatives from TI’s chapter members in Algeria, Bahrain, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, the Palestinian Authority and Yemen will be attending.

The source book was published by TI in 2001 and covers the means of ensuring transparency and accountability in all relevant sectors. It has been published in 20 languages as a resource for anti-corruption activists across the globe. Workshops enable different countries to adapt TI’s guidelines to their own societies.

Topics to be discussed at the workshops include the elected legislature, the role of the executive branch, an independent judicial system, free media, free and fair elections, public service ethics, conflict of interest, good financial management, the right to information and laws to fight corruption.
