Deadly Floods Ravage Saudi Arabia

At least 29 people died and 17 were injured as a result of flooding caused by heavy rains in Saudi Arabia, according to the Saudi daily Arab News.

The stormy weather began over the weekend, while Muslims were still carrying out the annual Hajj, or pilgrimage to Mecca, catching many pilgrims off guard.

Arab News reported the floods have damaged roads, homes, farms and vehicles, knocked down power lines and phone lines and rendered many residents in the Medina region homeless.

Diving teams are still recovering bodies of unidentified victims while they continue searching for missing people.

The governor of Medina ordered immediate aid for families harmed by the floods and ordered the identification of disaster areas which will be included in a report to the Saudi Interior Minister.

The deputy head of the civil defense unit in Medina, Sa’ad A-Shabib, said the unit, in cooperation with the government is giving aid to the affected areas in form of shelter, foodstuffs and other provisions, according to the Saudi daily Al-Watan.
