Deadly Riots in Kabul

At least eight people were killed and more than 100 injured in deadly riots in the Afghani capital Kabul on Monday.

The riots broke out after a traffic accident involving American troops resulted in the deaths of five people.

The accident occurred on Monday morning during rush hour, when a driver of a United States military vehicle lost control and hit several civilian cars. Following the accident, an angry crowd began throwing stones, setting fire to security vehicles and government buildings.

About a thousand people marched toward the American embassy shouting “Death to America” and “Death to Karazai,” the London-based A-Sharq Al-Awsat reported.

Government officials have said the ensuing riots were the worst since the ousting of the Taliban regime in late 2001.

According to IRIN, some eyewitnesses said at one point, U.S. and Afghani security forces opened fire on the demonstrators, causing the deaths.  A coalition spokesman in Afghanistan said an investigation of the incident is underway.
