Dozens Of Taliban Killed In Afghan-NATO Attack

Up to 30 Taliban fighters were killed and 15 wounded in a joint attack by NATO and Afghani forces on a hideout in southern Afghanistan this week, Afghan police sources said on Wednesday.

International and Afghan forces struck the hideout in Helmand province earlier this week, Helmand’s police chief confirmed. NATO also confirmed the strike, but gave no casualty numbers.

Helmand has been the flashpoint of several battles between soldiers and fighters loyal to the Taliban, which was ousted from the Afghani government in 2001.

NATO expects an upsurge in Taliban attacks as the weather gets warmer, but the international force believes the fighters are losing strength and will not be launching a “spring offensive,” NATO spokesman Brig.-Gen. Richard Nugee said.

However, Maj.-Gen. David Rodruigez, the incoming commander of the United Nations’ troops in Afghanistan, said he expected more attacks this year than in the previous year.

Fighters carried out a record 139 suicide attacks in 2006, according to the U.S. military.
