Egypt Tightens Security in Sinai Resorts

Egyptian security authorities have begun beefing up their security measures in Sinai, fearing attacks against tourists.

Security sources said the steps were taken after receiving information that “suspects” have entered the Sharm A-Sheikh area, the Egyptian Al-Wafd reported.

Egyptians authorities have been put on high alert at the entrances into Sinai from both the Gaza Strip and along the Israeli-Egyptian border.

Sinai has several popular holiday resorts. The attractions are a magnet for Israeli tourists, who are drawn to the serene surroundings because of their proximity and relatively low prices.

But tourism to the area has been marred by a recent history of terror attacks.

A series of bombings in October 2004 killed 34 people, among them Egyptians, Israelis and other foreigners.

Eighty-eight people, mostly Egyptians, were killed bomb attacks at the Sharm A-Sheikh resort in July 2005.

In April this year three bombs hit the Red Sea resort Dahab, killing 23 people.

The Israeli Counter Terrorism Bureau reissued a travel warning this week, urging Israelis to stay away from Sinai while calling on citizens vacationing there to leave immediately, citing a “grave threat of kidnapping.”

Israeli tourism to Sinai usually peaks in September and October, during the Jewish high holidays.
