Egyptian Minister of Education Dr. Husein Kamil Baha A-Din is denying reports, according to which his ministry was about to remove religious education from the school curriculum.
“No country which respects itself, its faith, its history and its heritage, can cancel the religious education from its curriculum,” said Baha A-Din as reported in Arabic daily A-Sharq Al-Awsat.

The minister added he is going to introduce a new class into the curriculum – moral studies. Pupils will learn how to “live a praiseworthy life, based on compassion, goodness, and volunteer-work.” However, this “will not come instead of the religious education,” the minister emphasized.
Baha A-Din was speaking at a conference at Cairo University on February 16.
