Fatah Leader in Hiding from Arafat

Palestinian Chairman Yassir Arafat has issued a direct order to arrest Hussein A-Sheikh, secretary of the Fatah movement in the West Bank, according to the London-based daily Al-Quds Al-‘Arabi.

The order was supposedly issued following the distribution of leaflets around the West Bank, criticizing the leadership of the Palestinian Authority. The targeted officials included senior Fatah members Ahmad Ghanim and Hani Al-Hasan and Prime Minister Ahmad Qurei’. The leaflets were signed by Hussein A-Sheikh and the Al-Aq’sa Martyrs Brigades, the military wing of Fatah.

Fatah’s Central Committee decided to remove A-Sheikh from his position as secretary of Fatah and appoint Muhammad Lutfi in his place, the paper reported.

The committee claimed it is demanding A-Sheikh’s arrest on grounds of his involvement in corruption.

The Palestinian Ministry of Information told The Media Line that the Palestinian Authority had no comment on the matter.

Hussein A-Sheikh is reportedly in hiding at the moment and is not answering his mobile phone. Meanwhile, Palestinian officials are trying to mediate between A-Sheikh and Arafat to solve the dispute.
