Four Years and Counting

In the next day or so Israel and the Palestinians will be ‘celebrating’ the fourth anniversary of the outbreak of uncontrolled violence. The Palestinians’ party began with the killing of a civilian and soldiers in the Gaza Strip over the weekend, while Israel rocked the night away by destroying a metal-work factory and then, most probably, killing one of Hamas’ top terrorists in Syria.

Meanwhile, the politicians are having a grand old time, talking lots and doing little, at best.

In Israel, Prime Minister Ariel Sharon does not know which way to turn. Each attempt he makes to move ahead with his Gaza-withdrawal plan is met with opposition, either within his cabinet, party or in the street. Palestinian premier Ahmad Qurei’ says he wants to push ahead with the peace process and internal reforms, but he can get nothing accomplished because of the stubbornness of his Fatah party leader and colleague Yassir Arafat.

The Americans, Europeans, Russia and the United Nations have nothing to show for their peace efforts.

So who has gained something over the last four years.

Hamas, Islamic Jihad, Fatah’s military wing Al-Aq’sa Martyrs Brigades and Hizbullah. In short, the terrorists.

True, the Israel Defense Forces and the U.S. State Department have dealt them a variety of blows, but all that has done is strengthen their verbal bravado and physical courage. Their plots become increasingly intelligent, seemingly often one step ahead of the enemy, at least.

Western reports suggest they receive their funds, arms and training from Syria and Iran. And the Palestinian police force seems incapable of tackling them at best and more likely downright scared.

The legacy of the last four years is thousands of dead and emboldened terror groups who threaten not only Israel but also American interests.

And for now they seem politically, morally, financially and militarily unstoppable.

Happy anniversary.
