French Hostages Released in Yemen

Four French nationals abducted earlier this month in Yemen have been released and are said to be in good condition, the official Yemenite news agency SABA reported.

However, the demands of the kidnappers will only be met in a few weeks.

The kidnappers were insisting members of their tribe be released from jail.

Sheikh ‘Aw’d Bin Al-Wazir, a lawmaker who helped negotiate their release, told the Yemenite daily Al-Ayyam that their fellow tribesmen would be released after the month of Ramadan, which began over the weekend.

According to SahwaNet, the MP delivered two of his sons to the kidnappers in exchange for the French hostages, to ensure the kidnappers demands would be met.

The French nationals were abducted on September 10 in the Shabwa province, about 480 kilometers (300 miles) east of the capital, ‘Sana.

A helicopter transferred the released hostages to the airport in ‘Sana, where they were received by a government official and the French ambassador to Yemen.

Negotiators managed to end the crisis as Yemenite security forces were considering a military solution to release the hostages.
