Berlin admitted on Tuesday that it released Hammadi last week, after a parole board granted him early release from jail.
In 1986, a German court found Hammadi guilty of a variety of terrorist-related offences, including the murder of Robert Statham, a passenger on the flight, who was in the U.S. Navy.
Three others who carried out the 17-day hijacking have never been caught.
