Hizbullah: Unity Gov’t ‘On Its Way to Being Accomplished’

A Lebanese unity government is imminent, top Hizbullah officials said on Monday. Hizbullah and its allies in the Lebanese parliament have been calling for the establishment of a unity government ever since the war with Israel ended in August. They attacked Prime Minister Fuad Siniora for his pro-Western leanings, and called to replace him.

The national unity government was "on its way to being accomplished… there is no way anyone could try to stop or run away from this reality," Hizbullah’s Executive Chairman Sayyid Hisham Seif A-Din told reporters, according to the party’s TV network Al-Manar.

The next round of negotiations towards the new government will begin on November 6. Experts are concerned that if the talks fail, Lebanon’s stability will be jeopardized.

Meanwhile, Lebanon’s Maronite patriarch Na’srallah Butrus ‘Sfeir attacked Hizbullah and other pro-Syrian groups, saying: "The Lebanese society is divided and there are those who are working toward returning the country to the age of [Syrian] tutelage."

U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, in an interview with the Lebanon Broadcasting Corporation (LBC), also warned against a possible destabilization in Lebanon.

"We, too, have heard that there are people who would like to destabilize the government of Prime Minister Siniora… there are people who would like to intimidate or assassinate again."
