Humanitarian Group Leaves Iraq

The humanitarian organization CARE Australia has evacuated its non-Iraqi staff from its Baghdad office after three rockets hit the building, causing minor damage, on Friday night.

The workers are currently in Amman, Jordan and will remain there until their safety in Iraq can be ensured, said the chairman of CARE Australia Sir William Deane in a news release. The organization’s Iraqi employees are on break in accordance with the Muslim festival of ‘Id Al-Fitr, but will take over all operations thereafter.

Deane added that CARE Australia’s vehicles had been hijacked recently. CNN reported that they received a written death threat from a group called “Iraqi Resistance” following the rocket attack.

CARE Australia has been providing humanitarian relief in Iraq since 1991.

International and non-governmental organizations have been the targets of deadly attacks by Iraq’s anti-coalition forces in recent months, causing many foreign workers to flee.
