Hundreds of Terror Suspects Arrested in Saudi Arabia

The Saudi Ministry of Interior announced Wednesday it had arrested 701 terror suspects in the past six months, of whom 181 were released for lack of sufficient evidence, Arab media outlets reported.

The terror cells were mainly managed from abroad and were primarily plotting against economic targets in Saudi Arabia, including its oil facilities.

One of the cells was based in the oil-rich Eastern Province. It was controlled by African immigrants, who were trying to recruit followers working at oil installations.

Another cell, based in Yanbou, was acquiring funds through fraud and theft, in order to execute terror attacks in the country, the statement added.

The Ministry of Interior also highlighted the fact that among those arrested were operators of terror websites, who used the Internet to spread their propaganda and recruit more followers.

The arrests were "another indication that Al-Qa’ida and the terrorist groups out there remain, and remain a challenge, not only for the U.S. and for Saudi Arabia but for the broader region and, really, for the world," U.S. State Department spokesman Tom Casey said following the Saudi statement.
