IAEA: Iran Ceased Uranium Enrichment

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) certified on Monday that Iran has ceased operation of twenty centrifuges used for the enrichment of uranium and that the centrifuges are under the surveillance of the agency.

The United States, however, was not satisfied that Iran is ending its nuclear weapons program. A White House spokesman said the Iranians have failed to comply with commitments many times during the past eighteen months and reserved the right to bring the issue of Iran’s nuclear program to the United Nations unilaterally.

Director General Muhammad Al-Barade’i, however, said the IAEA has completed its verification of Iran’s decision to suspend enrichment and reprocessing-related activities. The board of the IAEA then passed the resolution welcoming Iran’s move and instructing Al-Barade’i to report immediately any signs of Iran’s resuming nuclear activities.
