IAEA Urges Tighter Nuclear Control

A team of nuclear experts from the United Nations has drawn up a report stressing the need to tighten control over individual nations’ manufacturing of nuclear energy.

Head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Muhammad Al-Barade’i commissioned the report.
Experts are concerned that nuclear energy produced by individual nations can potentially be used to produce nuclear weapons.

The Media Line analysts say the report insinuates that Iran, recently in the spotlight for alleged production of nuclear weapons, should be subject to tighter scrutiny of its nuclear facilities.

The production of nuclear energy should be taken out of the hands of individual nations and given to multilateral groups, the report said, to ensure that the energy is indeed being used for peaceful purposes and not for the production of nuclear weapons.

The report was submitted ahead of a meeting in May that will review the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). The treaty gives the IAEA the mandate to verify that atomic programs in the signatory nations are used for peaceful purposes.

IAEA officials are concerned that nuclear programs in Iran and in North Korea have highlighted loopholes in the NPT.
