In the Biblical sense

As opposed to the other five days of Creation, when the Lord separated the waters from the earth he said what he saw was “good,” on two separate occasions. The Bible tells us that part of Creation took place on a Tuesday, according to Judaic tradition.

Tuesday January 28th, 2003 may not be a day upon which the Lord will want to reflect, saying “it was good” – even once.

You see, some 6,000 years after the Apple and Cain and Abel (again, according to the Judaic tradition), His Chosen People still seems incapable of choosing, or at least making the right choices.

The divisions in Israeli society, coupled with the disappointment with the country’s modern-day leaders mean Tuesday January 28th, 2003 is likely to achieve little for the advancement of the State of Israel, internally or otherwise.

With a floundered peace process, shipwrecked economy and drowning society, Israel needs strong leadership today more than ever.

Yet the people are so divided. Rather than the leader emerging from between the parting waters, it seems as though the people are left drowning in a quagmire, with no outstretched arm offering salvation.

You may be thinking “enough with the mixed metaphors,” which is probably fair comment, but the underlying point here is that it will take little short of a miracle of biblical proportions for this election to be the catalyst for a better tomorrow.

The likely outcome is that the ruling party will hold approximately one-quarter of the seats in the 120-member Knesset, Israel’s parliament – unable to implement its platform, its hands tied and mouth gagged by a gaggle of smaller parties. Be it Labor and Shinui, or a host of one-issue rightist and religious parties, the Likud will most probably find it impossible to get anything done – positive or negative.

Constructing an Israeli government is not that different from building the Tower of Babel. The more layers it takes on the shakier it becomes, until not too long after it comes tumbling down, bringing everyone with it.

And once again it is His people that suffers the consequences.
