Iran Agrees to Suspend Nuclear Activity

Iran has renewed its pledge to freeze its uranium enrichment until talks resume this summer. The pledge was the result of intense negotiations with European negotiators.

Iran assured the suspension of its uranium enrichment last November but has since warned it will resume this activity.

The agreement with European foreign ministers from the United Kingdom, France and Germany will defer an immediate referral of the issue to the United Nations Security Council, a move likely to put a lot of pressure on Iran.

Tehran insists its nuclear program is for civilian purposes, but Washington suspects they are producing nuclear weapons and has been pressing to refer the issue to the Security Council.

European negotiators are trying to persuade Iran to abandon its nuclear program in exchange for political, trade and technological incentives.

Uranium enrichment is part of the process of creating nuclear energy but when highly enriched it can also be used to produce nuclear weapons.

The agreement coincides with the run-up to Iran’s presidential election, slated for June 17. The election campaign began on Wednesday.
