Iran Blasts ‘Evil-Minded People’

Those who try to scupper Iran’s “peaceful nuclear program” are “evil minded,” the country’s President Mahmoud Ahmadi Nejad told a rally on Friday, according to the state news agency IRNA. He attacked those trying to block the program of resorting to “threat, propaganda and political pressure.”

A meeting of the United Nations Security Council slated for Friday will seemingly take place late next week after European foreign policy head Javier Solana holds talks with Iran’s chief negotiator ‘Ali Larijani. The men were originally scheduled to meet on Friday, a day after the International Atomic Energy Agency told the Security Council that Iran has resumed its nuclear-enrichment program and therefore failed to meet the U.N. deadline for ending its nuclear activities.

"Sanctions cannot dissuade Iranians from their decision to make progress. On the contrary, many of our successes, including access to the nuclear fuel cycle and producing heavy waters, have been achieved under sanctions," Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadi Nejad told Spain’s former Prime Minister, Philippe Gonzalez, according to the official Iranian news agency IRNA.

The Security Council is not expected to immediately impose sanctions on Iran, due to pressures from two of its permanent member, Russia and China. The council will now conduct further discussions to decide on its next steps. Russia and China, which both have economic interests in Iran, will try to convince the council to accept Iran’s recent offer to renew dialogue.

During his talk with Gonzalez, Ahmadi Nejad called on European countries to take "independent and logical policies", and to divert from the "hostile and wrongful policies of the U.S."
