Iran Pledges $250m to P.A.

The Iranian government has pledged to give the Palestinians $250 million, Palestinian sources told the London-based Al-Hayyat.

The money is intended to compensate for the suspension of cash flow from the United States and Israel.

Iranian officials made the pledge to Khalid Mash’al, known as the head of Hamas’ political bureau, when he was in Iran last week.

Hamas officials are approaching Arab and Muslim governments in a bid to muster support and monetary aid, amid concerns that the international community will cut off funding to a Hamas-led government.

Washington has asked the Palestinian Authority (P.A.) to return $50 million dollars in aid earmarked for infrastructure projects, fearing that it would fall into the hands of Hamas which it designates a terror organization.

Israel is withholding money it collected in taxes and customs duties for the P.A.

The European Commission on Monday unveiled a package worth more than $143 million in emergency aid to keep the P.A. functioning. The money is intended to meet the basic needs of the Palestinians and to help stabilize the finances of the current caretaker government.

Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri said the EU announcement represents the “failure of U.S. and Israeli pressure on the West to impose a siege on the Palestinian people and on Hamas.”
