Iran Still Mulls Russian Proposal

Iran is not ruling out a Russian proposal to enrich uranium on Russian soil, Iran’s foreign minister said on Thursday.

During a visit to Indonesia, Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki told reporters there are still issues such as timing and location which need to be discussed, but that a compromise is not out of the question.

The proposal, which aims to end the impasse between Iran and the international community over its nuclear program, suggests Iran enriches uranium for its nuclear program on Russian soil.

This will make it more accessible for international supervision and ensure Iran is not enriching the substance for nuclear weapons.

Weapons-grade uranium, unlike uranium used in a conventional energy reactor, is enriched to a much higher degree.

The international community has been scrutinizing Iran’s nuclear program since 2002, fearing the program is for military purposes. Iran insists the program has a peaceful aim.

Earlier this month Iran demanded the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) remove seals and surveillance cameras from most nuclear sites in Iran, leaving the agency with minimal means to supervise Iran’s nuclear sites.

Tehran’s demands came in response to a decision by the IAEA to refer Iran to the United Nations Security Council, where Iran could face sanctions.

Iran announced it will not allow snap inspections of its nuclear sites and intends to restart enrichment of uranium after the issue reaches the Security Council.
