A top Iranian official has warned that Iran would “wipe Israel off the map” if Israel attacks its nuclear facilities, in a much-publicized statement that was not the first of its kind.
“Their threats to attack Iran’s nuclear facilities cannot be realized. They are aware Tehran’s reaction will be so harsh that Israel will be wiped off the face of the earth and U.S. interests will be easily damaged,” said Sayyid Mas’ud Jazairi, head of the Revolutionary Guard, in a statement to an Iranian news agency. The Revolutionary Guard is a military organization that operates in parallel to the Iranian army.

The statement came after Israel announced last week that Iran would have nuclear capability by 2007.
Jazairi said that Iran would not initiate the attack, and blamed the U.S. for being behind a potential Israeli threat, according to reports.
Israel is widely believed to be a major nuclear power though it has never admitted to its capabilities.
