Iranian Weapons Sent to Syria via Turkey Discovered by Accident:

An attack attributed to Kurdish rebels in southeast Turkey has led to the discovery of an undeclared shipment of weapons sent from Iran to Syria, the London-based daily Al-Hayyat reported.

The incident occurred last Friday when a train was derailed in Bingol province following an attack. Turkish security forces said the culprits were probably Kurdish separatists affiliated with the PKK.

When investigators arrived at the scene of event they incidentally discovered that one of the cars contained American-made rocket launchers and rifles. The cargo was initially declared as construction materials, Turkish security sources said.

The attorney general of Bingol province has already launched an investigation into the matter.

As Iran and Syria do not share a border, passenger and freight trains frequently cross through Turkey, which is located between the two countries.

The final destination of the weapons discovered is not yet clear. Iran and Syria do not conceal their military cooperation. The Media Line’s analysts suggest therefore that the fact the shipment was not declared implies that its final destination might be either Shi’ite Iraqi armed groups affiliated with Iran, or Lebanon’s Hizbullah.
