Iran’s nuclear chief heads to China

Following his trip to Moscow on Tuesday, Iran’s Secretary-General of the Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) and chief nuclear negotiator, ‘Ali Larijani, arrived Thursday in Beijing to hold talks with senior Chinese officials. Larijani will try to win China’s backing for his country’s nuclear program, reports the Iranian online magazine Iran Focus.

The official state-run news agency IRNA reported that Larijani will be staying in China for two days where he will talk about Iran’s nuclear activities and Tehran-Beijing bilateral relations.

On his trip to Russia, Larijani met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, and with his Russian counterpart, Igor Ivanov. Among the issues discussed in the meetings was Russia’s proposal for the establishment of a joint uranium enrichment facility in Russia, reported the Iranian paper Persian Journal.

A special meeting of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Board of Governors is scheduled for February 2. The board will discuss the implementation of IAEA safeguards in Iran and related Board resolutions.

The special meeting was requested by the Permanent Missions of France, Germany and the United Kingdom in a letter on January 18 to the Chairman of the Board.
