Iraq’s Neighbors Discuss Security

The neighboring states of Iraq vowed to help Iraq’s interim government stop the daily terror attacks at a summit in Cairo on Wednesday, according to news reports.

The foreign ministers of Jordan, Kuwait, Turkey, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Turkey, Iraq and Egypt declared their support for both U.N. assistance in maintaining security and also the full sovereignty of the interim government.

The officials reportedly said that their interior ministers and security authorities would meet in the near future to discuss the issues more in-depth.

Iraq’s Foreign Minister Hushyar Zibari had called on his neighbors to heighten security measures along their common borders.

Syria and Iran have both been accused of facilitating the movement of terrorists to and from Iraq via their borders.

The meeting followed an announcement that the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) would visit Iraq for the first time since before the U.S.-led invasion of the country to dismantle Saddam Hussein’s nuclear program.
