Israel Calls for “Snap-Back” Sanctions Supporters of Iranian Nuclear Deal Said Were Automatic

During the intense debate over the Iranian nuclear deal in 2015, proponents invariably dismissed Israeli warnings that Iran would, without doubt, flout the conditions by insisting “snap-back” proposals, those in line to revert to status-quo-ante or new ones awaiting activation, would obviate the problem and justify the risk. Now that Iran has openly breached the agreement for a second time within two weeks, Israel’s Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu has called for the snap-backs to be activated but to no apparent response. At the start of his weekly cabinet meeting, the Israeli leader told his colleagues that, “I call on my friends, the heads of France, Britain and Germany – you signed this deal and you said that as soon as they take this step, severe sanctions will be imposed – that was the Security Council resolution. Where are you?” Netanyahu asked. In a somewhat ironic response to the international condemnations of Iranian breaches, the Islamic Republic’s deputy foreign minister insisted that the document it just breached is a “valid document” and his government “seeks its continuation.”
