Israel’s Justice Minister Yosef (Tommy) Lapid is proposing the country’s government order a large-scale opinion poll on Prime Minister Ariel Sharon’s plan to remove Israelis from the Gaza Strip.
Initially, the government proposed staging a referendum on the issue.

However, Lapid told Israel Radio a survey of 10,000 people would produce far more detailed understanding of the will of the nation.
The poll would also place a far smaller burden on the taxpayer.
The opposition Labor Party is pressuring the government to keep its promise and hold a referendum.
