Israel Targets Lebanon Bases

Israeli aircraft targeted a Palestinian training base south of Beirut on Wednesday morning, after Katyusha missiles were launched onto communities in northern Israel on Tuesday evening.

The Israeli army spokesman said the army views the attacks against Israeli civilians inside Israel with “extreme severity.”

The Katyusha attack signified an escalation of violence in Israel’s north, which has been relatively quiet since Israel withdrew its army from southern Lebanon in May 2000.

“Israel holds the Lebanese government responsible for these attacks,” the army spokesman said, “in that it has done nothing to dismantle the terror organizations operating from within Lebanon, in violation of United Nations decisions 425 and 1559.” The army added that it will act with determination to defend Israeli citizens from such attacks.

Missiles that landed in Kiryat Shmona damaged three residential buildings.

An Israeli fireman was lightly wounded during his duty and three Israelis suffered from shock.

Israel believes the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine – General Command was responsible for the attacks. However, Israel says the attack was carried out with the blessing of the Lebanese terror organization Hizbullah, which dominates southern Lebanon.
