Israeli premier Ariel Sharon has given his official response to Syrian President Bashar Al-Asad’s call for a resumption of peace talks between Jerusalem and Damascus.
Al-Asad told The New York Times he is ready to commence talks, but only from the position they were left at in 2000.

Then Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak had reportedly agreed to considerable territorial compromise on the Golan Heights.
Sharon says he welcomes a resumption of negotiations but they must be without preconditions.
Sharon made the comment during Sunday’s weekly cabinet meeting in Jerusalem.
Israel annexed the Golan Heights, which it won after being invaded by Syria, during the 1967 Six Day War.
