Israeli Cabinet Approves Peace Road Map

Israel’s government has approved the ‘Quartet’-proposed peace Road Map on Sunday.

Seven of Prime Minister Ariel Sharon’s Likud party colleagues in the cabinet either voted against or abstained.

However four of the five Shinui ministers approved the plan.

It is the first time the State of Israel has officially adopted a policy favoring the creation of a Palestinian state.

The Americans and Palestinians have been pressuring Jerusalem to formally adopt the plan, which calls for a Palestinian state inside three years.

The political right in Israel said the government should reject the proposal.

The country’s Labor Party said it would provide a political safety net for Sharon had a majority of ministers voted against the Road Map.
