Jordan Acquits Fighters for Planning Attacks

On Monday a Jordanian military court found thirteen Muslims not guilty of conspiring to commit terror attacks against American targets in Jordan, including the American Embassy.

However, AP reported that 11 of the defendants, who include three Saudis and ten Jordanians, were sentenced to prison terms of up to 15 years for possessing explosives, a verdict which can be appealed. Police uncovered the plot in late 2002, but no attacks had been carried out.

Two of the defendants were acquitted for lack of evidence on both charges.

According to the indictment, the defendants wished to go to Afghanistan to fight American forces, AP reported, but when they realized this would be impossible, they allegedly chose targets in Jordan.

Jordanian officials said on condition of anonymity that the defendants are not suspected of belonging to Al-Qa’ida.
